How do I keep Snake Tank Warm?
Hi, we bought a Ball Python for our son about 6 weeks ago.
He came with a small 10g tank and we had a few problems with him at first, not eating etc. We took advice and bought him a bigger tank which is a 40g so he has lots of space. He started eating immediately and seemed very happy.
Our problem is we live in a very open house with high ceilings and we are struggling to keep the heat in his tank.
We started with 75W bulbs and increased to 100W. Last night I ran both red bulbs and the temp was only 77 degrees. As a result he is only active if we get him out of the tank and put him infront of the fire.
The problem seems to be the drafts in the house from the height of the roof and the opening of doors etc.
How high can we increase the bulbs?
Can we cover the tank with anything safely without hurting him?
I don't want to put him in the basement as we have very little daylight down there.
Any advice on this would be helpful.
Hi, im gordon and iv kept snakes for a good few years now and like yourself i also had this problem, I found it much easier 2 use an under tank heat mat hooked up to a thermostat that u can set to diff temperatures higher for during the day and lower for night. This is also an easier way 2 create a hot side and cold side of the tank for the snake to regulate its own body temperature by moving between them. They are not too expensive and can be bought at most pet supply stores. Another way is to insulate the tank lid with some layers of cardboard u'll be surprised at how well something so simple can keep the heat in the tank. What is the red filmy stuff in my fish tank?
My fish tank overnight got all this red filmy stuff covering rocks and its also on the fake plants and stuff... anyone have any idea what it is and how can i get rid of it?
This is probably a red cyanobacteria. Is your tank freshwater or saltwater? This is more commonly seen in saltwater (as red: http://www.sloreef.com/bojan/Cyanobacteria_files/Cyanobacteria1.jpg ), and freshwater is usually blue-green (http://www.aquamax.de/Shop/Artikelbilder/Zusatzbilder/Algen%20im%20Aquarium_Blaualgen%20-%20Cyanobacteria_STUG_cyano1.jpg ), but there are exceptions.
If this is what you have, there are chemicals you could use to treat this, but be aware most of these are antibiotics which will also affect the "good" bacteria in your tank - the ones that remove the ammonia and nitrite, which are toxic to your fish. This would leave the fish at risk for ammonia and nitrite poisoning. There are other methods (lighting, nutrients) that can (and should) be used first.
