I'm running xp pro and service pack 3.secunia tells me server 2000 is at end of life and a category 4 threat?

I need more memory and a custom 32 bit install for windows 7,migrating to server 2003 doesnt look like much fun,would downloading ubuntu as a alternate o.s.be a good idea?are there any pitfalls?would it slow down or hurt windows in any way?

The trick is to understand your system well enough to keep the disk partitions for Windows and Linux separate. Linux will require a partition that is not FAT or NTFS. If Windows is using all the disks, you'll need t figure a way to free up space and place it in a partition of its own. There are tools to this, and many people can do it manually.

If the system has multiple partitions and all files can be moved off of one to make space for Linux, then you're fine. This would be a case where some Windows partition is empty, or just has data, but no programs on it. Any program using the data needs to be configured to know it was moved.

If there is a big partition at the end of the disk, it can be backed up, split, reformatted, then its data restored. The drive letter will remain the same; but a new drive (for Linux) would be created.

If the system is one one big disk partition and you don't have experience with repartitioning disks, It's probably not wort the risk. You would have to backup everything, repartition, then restore everything, or use some fancy partition-shrinking tool.

Another easy scenario, and probably the best, is to add a disk, specifically for Linux. That way Linux can be partitioned in a standard way, which uses several separate partitions.

Once Linux has its own space, there will be no problems with both OSs coexisting. Just be certain to install Linux on the Linux partition(s) and not on top of any part of Windows.

Install the Linux boot loader on a Linux partition or on the 2nd disk--not on the MBR of the 1st (Windows boot) disk. Set the BIOS to boot from the 2nd disk if that holds Linux. When installing Linux, tell GrUB that Window is on the 1st disk. That puts Windows on the new boot menu.

Whether on the 1st or 2nd disk, make the Linux partition the active one. If for any reason Windows won't boot from the new boot loader, the 1st disk can be selected in BIOS and the Windows partition can be make active again.
