blockage in my mercury 40hp engine at the top of the pick up pipe?
i've just changed my impeller and still no water is coming out of my engine (mercury 40hp 1980's), took bottom of engine off again and put hose on this is totally clear, i've put the hose on the tell tale to squirt water back through, water comes out the other end but not out of my copper pick up pipe just from everywhere else, there seems to be a blockage where my pick up pipe goes into the engine, any suggestions to unblock?
You are correct that there is a blockage. There is a plastic grommet that is between the power head, and the lower housing, that melts and blocks the water from reaching the powerhead. The thermostat housing and water jacket will be clear. Depending on your skill level. the only way to repair this is to remove the powerhead. It sounds more difficult than it is. You have to remove the lower cowling first then there are several (about 7) bolts that screw up into the base of the power head. Most of the powerhead parts stay in place, but you do have to disconnect the shift mechanism, to the gear case, but a trick I use is photo everything and put it back the way you take it off. Once off, you'll see the problem. drill or use a knife to open it back up, then you can use permitex to reseal everything, and put it back together. If your a 4 cycle, which I think you are, drain the oil first then refill when finished. Or, just take it to a mechanic and tell him where to look. It's a common thing but don't waste time on all the other stuff like thermostat and water tube..... Good Luck!

Introduction to FEA Vibration Analysis for Pipe and Piping Systems
Pipe and Piping systems are most critical component for Oil & Gas, Refinery, Petroleum, Marine and Shipping industry. Piping system performance analysis is divided into FEA analysis of Static, Dynamic, Vibration, Fatigue, Failure and Thermal characteristics of materials used. Dynamic analysis is often subjected to four main tasks - simulation of initial excitation under boundary conditions, acoustic simulation, piping assembly modelling and analyzing mutual acoustic-mechanical issues. Among all this the most difficult task is simulation due to lack of experimental data and varied geometry of piping assembly.
With help of most advance Finite Element Analysis or FEA (the most powerful Mechanical Engineering Analysis method) piping vibration analysis can be carried out in cost-effective and efficient manner. FEA analysis is divided into creation of finite-element model for pipe geometry of piping, resolving of Eigen value problem to evaluate general frequencies and vibration timeline evaluation for selected check points.
Since piping in a refinery or power generation unit undergoes some amount of vibration, it is essential to establish acceptable limits of vibration and communicate the same to avoid future occurrences of failure. Piping components are also subjected to stress, fatigue, thermal deflections and corrosion which also need to be considered when providing final approval.
Pipe vibrations can cause massive disruption in the supply of fluids and hence corrective measures are often required to reduce the vibrations to an acceptable level. Piping Steady-state vibration analysis is required to evaluate the fatigue life of the piping material and analyze stresses that can cause failure during the lifespan of the system. Factors that affect it life include environmental forces, corrosion, erosion and natural calamities among others. Since piping in a refinery or power generation unit undergoes some amount of vibration, it is essential to establish acceptable limits of vibration and communicate the same to avoid future occurrences of failure. Piping components are also subjected to stress, fatigue, thermal deflections and corrosion which also need to be considered when providing final approval.
In mechanical engineering pipe stresses are expressed as code limits. For vibration analysis, piping codes evidently showcase pipe stress limits, restricted piping response and eigen values for modal shapes.
