Is there a way to cap a vent on a rooftop air conditioner?
My a/c unit is on my roof, but when we have heavy rain and wind I get a leak in the ceiling right below where the main ventilation duct enters the house. During a normal "light" rainstorm there is no leakage. So is there any way to cap the main vent of the a/c unit to help keep as much water out of the ventilation without compromising the airflow to the unit? and if there is a way, where would I find the best part for such a repair?
I have found that the panels unless the are put back and taped will suck in water when it rains hard. The indoor fan at certain panels create negative air and will suck in rain water. To see if it is the roof curb shut off the power and take a hose and spray around the equipment hard, flood around it. If no water leaks then put metal tape on the seams of the panels, make sure all screws are in place also.

roof vent for washer no cap ?
I have a 3" roof vent for the washer drain. It doesn't have a cap. Is one recommended? I noticed that the drain in the basement is backing up. Could the vent be plugged with snow?
The snow level on the vent is currently to the top of the vent. We don't have any odor but the drain is backing up in the basement. Should a person put on a vent cap or extend the pipe?
The gasses vented out of a roof-top vent stack are always warmer than snow; any snow falling inside of the vent will melt, and eventually find its way out the other end of the system. (Is this a three inch vent pipe in the basement, or is it the vent increaser at the roof penetration?) Do not cap it, this will affect the air-flow over the top, which is what draws the gasses out of the pipe.
A three inch vent stack is usually used for more than one fixture. You should look at the drain lines first, as that is almost always where the blockage will be; although I've seen bird's nests built into the top of plumbing vents that have caused problems.
My advice is the same that Doctors give to Med Students; "When you hear hoof-beats, think of horses, not zebras." A backed up drain is usually an indication of a blockage downstream of where the back-up shows itself. If this is a floor drain, you may save a lot of aggravation by hiring a plumber or sewer contractor with the equipment to "televise" the line from the clean-out just down the line from wherever the back-up is. Have him run the camera in both directions (out of the house, and back toward the drain that is backing up).
Not only will this show you exactly what the problem is, it will tell the contractor exactly what needs to be done. The beauty of it all is, you have it all on video tape or a computer disk. You can have the guy that televised it do the repair (generally cheaper, since he's already there), or get some bids. Either way, you should know exactly what needs to be done.
