Problems with Halogen lights?
I was advised to change all my old lights and convert to Halogen about a year ago to save electricity, however the new halogen bulbs are giving a white light, compared to the old fashioned light bulbs. Just discovered light damages on some of my furniture and plants are not thriving, this despite using low watts bulbs. Anybody experienced these problems?
Most of the bulbs are 15 watts and they are picture lights, hung above paintings.They haven't actually damaged the paintings, but all the frames, that are made of mahogany are clearly damaged. The old lamps actually had stronger light bulbs 25 Watts, but never had any problems with plants or the the picture frames until the Halogen lights were installed. It was a man from the Electricity board that recommended that I should change to Halogen lights as these were more economic. Clearly he didn't know what he was talking about.
There is Halogen and also Philips Halogena. Sounds alike but the two are totally different.
Look for the Halogena that are marked "Energy Saver"

Unlike many CFL's and LED's Halogena are fully capable of dimming with regular dimmer. Dimming will cut the wattage use almost in half when fully dimmed. A typical 40watt Halogena will burn 40watts of energy but light output ( Lumens ) is equivalent to a 65watt
They also are very comparable to incandescent "warm" light. Not your typical halogen "white" light.
Out of curiosity what "lower wattage" do you have on the halogen bulbs"
Plants do best with fluorescent lighting because fluorescent lights emit plasma radiation. Plasma radiation is what the sun emits.
Picture lamps usually take the elongated tube bulbs. I believe max is 25 watts. The key factor here is the proximity and the heat. Halogens will generally produce the must heat. A 75 watt halogen will average 450 degree Fahrenheit @ 8 inches. Your 25 watt bulb might be half that. I'd opt for regular 25 or even 15 watt incandescent tube bulbs on a dimmer.
If the outlet is plugged into a receptacle that is not switched you can still dim by other means. Just to name a few:
1) x10 / Insteon dimmable outlet modules
2) lamp toggle switches that support high/low settings
3) have an electrician rewire for a dimmer

The three whites ar neutrals to switched circuits, one is the neutral of the hot pair.
The black of the black and white wire nut is the hot of the hot pair to the white of the switch leg.
One of the three blacks is the hot from the switch controling two other switched circuits, the other two blacks.
Connect the black to the other three blacks, the white to the three whites and the green to the box.
