1980 Honda CB400t motorcycle Pivoting clutch piece on top of gearbox - no tension?
I just got the above motorcycle and one of the owners before me took off the side cover off the right side of the gearbox to paint it. After putting it back on and tightening the bolts, the piece on top that the clutch cable ball slides into doesn't seem to act right. When I try to twist it (clockwise), it builds up tension, but then pops and all the tension goes away. I assume it might be the spring on the inside of the cover that's attached to this piece, but after looking at that, I also noticed that there doesn't seem to be anything connecting it to any of the plates or gears. I'm not entirely sure what the inside of this thing is supposed to look like, but if anyone has any ideas or things I need to make sure is in place, I'd gladly appreciate it.
Yes I did buy this bike without trying it, since it wasn't in any condition to run yet. It has 10k miles on it and was only $300, so even if it doesn't work, I get to learn off this. Well worth it to me.
What's most likely happened is that the Clutch Lifter piece has fallen out when clutch cover was 1st taken off,,,and is still sitting where the oil drain pan was dumped way-back-when.
They fall out,,,silently and unseen,,,,eluding the unsuspecting mechanic.
In That day & age,,,it was a ODD,,A-Typical Part for a Honda.
..........................................................
Anyway,,,
The External actuating Lever----The Arm where cable connects to case---that Arm SHOULD BE positioned approx straight across engine,,perpendicular.
When ya push it forward,,,there should be Very Little motion or travel.
Maybe a 1/4"
It doesn't have much range at all,,as far as FreePlay from the perpendicular position.
When Cable is Disconnected (just to make it easier to fiddle with by hand),,,if that Arm has More Travel than that,,,
Only 2 things can cause that.
A#1 most common cause---The Lifter has gone missing.
#2,,the Clutch assembly itself is put together wrong,,leaving the Clutch stack too short
Here's a picture:
http://images.powersportsnetwork.com/fiche/images/Honda/1980/Motorcycles/1940_RIGHT%20CRANKCASE%20COVER.gif
Item # 8 is most probably GONE
It goes into a Hole,,INSIDE the Clutch cover.
If Ya look at the picture of the Cover itself,,,cover is Labelled Item #1.
Directly Down from that label --the #1,,,You can see a "large" hole.
That's where # 8 belongs.
It intersects the throwout arm's lower end.
You'll see it all very clear & obvious when ya get it apart.
It's Tricky when parts are missing,,,Nothing there to give you a Clue.
That's ALL there is to the Throwout.
NO rod.
NO ball-bearing.
Lifter #8
Old Part Number 22847-413-000
New Part Number 22847-ME0-000 (current)
If that's not the prob,,I'd be surprised.
But if that's NOT the problem,,,it's gonna be in improper clutch assembly
Good Luck

Within the u.k. I bought a car from a dealership apx 3 weeks ago, the car was given a full service but i'm not
happy with the brakes!! i have a 3 month warranty which covers me engine and gearbox, am i within my rights to get them to look at the brakes free of charge???
Hi I would ask them to take a look if they are good company they will do it free of charge it would have been nice if you had said what you are not happy about with the brakes and if this has happened since you got the car .
Hope this helps
