Can i use alloy/Alluminium for an intermediate exhaust pipe?
Hi,
I bought a sports muffler for my mk3 supra, to replace the factory item, however the factory muffler box is ~45CM longer than my new one, so obviously i need to put a pipe in, otherwise the new muffler is going to be right behind the diff, and not at the back of the car.
No ive found some on ebay, the price is pretty good, however i dont know if it would hold up, (Its meant for intercooler piping) or if it would melt? Its going to be after the cat and a muffler, so its further down the system than the cat back even, just the last 50cm of the system.
If that wouldnt hold up, could somebody link me to some pipe that would, i dont mind if its just plain mild steel..
here's what you do....
Go to a decent muffler shop. They should have an assortment of adapters/extensions to fit the new muffler to the old exhaust system along with the appropriate clamps or fasteners. Sometimes they also carry these at an auto parts store like: Pep boys, etc.
In your situation, you may simply need a short extension (say 2 inches) and/or you have an issue with the old exhaust pipes condition.
Aluminum pipes will work temporarily..... BUT it woun't work out in the long run because, it's a soft metal and can not withstand the stress and tempeture variations needed in an exhaust system.
You can use stainless steel, but the extra cost really doesn't justify itself in this situation.

1000RR stock exhaust mod
Anyone get their side exhaust (side pipes) to pass massachusetts safety inspection?
The law states exhuast must exit beyond the passangers and trunk area. I have a 79 Jeep CJ with a 350 and side exhaust. Law doesnt even allow factory side pipes but I know I see people driving around with them!
I've never heard of a law that states the exhaust must extend past the trunk and passenger area; if that's the case, a lot of vehicles wouldn't pass (Cobras, Vipers and many other modified vehicles).
Maybe the vehicles you're seeing have dummy lakes pipes on them or maybe they've got connectors on the back to run the exhaust out to the rear? I doubt either one is the case.
Maybe the owners know something or somebody at the Inspection station (Money talks! I'm not suggesting a bribe, but a tip or gratuity could help..). Perhaps they install the pipes after the vehicle is inspected with changeover a yearly scheduled thing?
I'd look into the law; perhaps you're misreading it? Good luck!
(By the bye, my '71 Dodge Challenger had "Outsiders" in NY and I never had a problem.)
