A 23.4 kg solid aluminum cylindrical wheel of radius 0.52 m is rotating about its axel in frictionless bearings with angular velocity w=32.8 rad/s. If its temperature is now raised from 20.0 degrees Celsius to 75.0 degrees Celsius, what is the change in angular velocity?
coefficient of expansion (alpha) for aluminum = 24 X 10^6 /degree Celcius
First, find the new radius:
r' = r + Δr
Δ r = r * α * Δ T
α = 24 X 10^-6 /degree Celcius ... Note the correction. It is "10^-6"
ΔT = 55C
Apply conservation of angular momentum
L = Iω = I'ω'
ω' = ω(I/I')
I ∝ mr^2 .... ergo
I/I' = (r/r')^2
I/I' = (r/(r+Δr)^2
I/I' = (1/(1 + αΔT)^2 ... therefore,
ω' = 32.8 rads/s * (1/(1+24x10^-6/C * 55C) ^2

Physics HELP! Determining the strestch of an aluminum rod?
The drawing shows one arm of a centrifuge. The arm is a solid cylinder of aluminum with a length of 0.12 m and a cross-sectional area of 1.3 10-4m2. At the end of the aluminum arm is a 0.59-kg specimen holder. By how much does the aluminum rod stretch when the centrifuge has an angular speed of 186 rad/s?

First, find the mass of the rod
Al density = 2.7 g/cm^3
Mass = 2.7 g/cm^3 * .12 m * 1.3x10-4 m^2
= 0.04212 kg
Second, Find force caused by basket
F = m *a = m w^2 r
= .59 kg * (186 rad/s)^2 * .12m
= 2450 N
Now, here is where I cheat a little knowing that the strain on aluminum will be linear and the moment of inertia for a rod is 1/3 r. [Note, I think I'm right. Beats intergrating. And it won't make much difference in the final answer.]
We now calculate the Force for the rod at distance r then divided by 3 to get the average force in the rod caused by the stress.
Fr = m w^2 r/3 = 0.04212 kg * (186 rad/s)^2 * .12m/3
= 58 N
So the total average tension on the rod will be
F + Fr = 2450 + 58 = 2508 N
Ok, now on to young's modulus for
Al = 70 GPa = F * L / A * dL
therefore
dl = F*L/A *70 GPa
= 2508 N * .12m / 1.3 10^-4m2 * 70 GPa
= 3.307 x 10^-5 m
= 33.07 micrometers
