Engine surges at high speeds?

I have a 1987 Ford Ranger 2.9L V6. I have replaced most sensors on this vehicle. In the city speeds up to 55mph it is fine, but when I get on the freeway up to 65-75mph the vehicle starts surging and loosing power. I've had the engine and tranny rebuilt. These are the sensors I've replaced: Air idle control, MAP, Air charge temp, coolant temp, EGR vaccum solenoid, EGR valve, PCV valve, Fuel filter, fuel pump, spark plugs, distributor, spark plug cables, Throttle position sensor, Coil, EGR valve pressure sensor, and new computer. We checked fuel pressure and it is normal. We also checked for vaccum leaks and there are none. It idles fine, but when you get the RPM's around 2500-3000 it starts to surge. It happens much more frequently when A/C is on, but it doesn't have to be on. You think maybe the A/C clutch is rubbing or crankshaft position sensor is going bad?

Any chance your exhaust has packed it in? In the case of your cat converter, perhaps literally? After all you've done, excessive exhaust backpressure still remains a possibility. It'll certainly cause your symptoms, and being a 1987, I'd bet you've got quite a few miles on it.

I see you replaced your distributor - hope it was a good one - and that should have taken care of the internal Hall pickup. But did you replace the ICM that sits (in the circuit) between that sensor and the coil? It should be on the side of the distributor (they didn't move them to the firewall until later on some Ford models). These aren't usually RPM sensitive (they usually just work or falter or die completely regardless of engine speed), but as often as they fail, I'd say anything is possible.

Last, there's the coil itself, and that *can* be RPM sensitive. After what you've already done, it's cheap and worth a try.

It looks as though you've already covered all the rest of my "normal" suggestions with your massive list of parts replaced and vacuum leaks checked.

What wires need to be soldered when changing handlebars?

Ok i bought my clutch cable my throttle cable and my brake cable for my new 16" ape hangers but there are some wires coming out from underneath both throttle and brake housings that ive seen them soldered when changing out handle bars so what r these wires for and do i need to extend them also? How do i order them? Thanks for the feedback

These are the wires for your handlebar-mounted switches (hi/low beam; horn; turn signals; kill switch; starter) as well as a switch on the clutch lever so that you don't start the bike in gear. If the bike is a Harley, there is probably a wiring extension kit available for your specific model. If it's a Japanese cruiser, it is more likely that you have to extend the wiring yourself, but check with your local dealer: It's an easy but time-consuming job.
