Will I need a bigger winch cable with multiple snatch blocks?

I have a 2500lb winch and use a single snatch block with it. The winch uses 3/16" wire rope rated at 4200lb. If I use more than one snatch block, will I need a bigger wire rope? Or does each 'pass' of cable share the stress?

No you do not need a bigger cable when using multiple snatch blocks.
You are correct about each pass of cable sharing the stress/ load.

If the load on the winch is more than the capacity of the winch, without a snatch block, the load on the 3/16" cable is only 2500 pounds, well below the 4200lb rating of the 3/16" cable.

You do need to consider a safety factor with any cable, the normal safety factor is 5, and for anything to do with Humans , the safety factor is 10 or better.

The wire rope rating is for new cable only and the cable degrades with time, hence the safety factor.

If you divide the 4200 pound rating by 5, you get a 840lb working load for a single run of 3/16" cable.

To match that working load to the winch, divide the 2500lb winch capacity by 840lb and you get 2.97

That means you need at least 3 passes/ strands of 3/16" cable.

Reeving the cable looks like this.

From the winch drum to a single pulley snatch block with a load hook, back to a single stationary pulley by the winch drum , back to the snatch block and terminated there.

Rated capacity is the load which a new wire rope may handle under given operating conditions and at assumed design factor. A design factor of 5 is chosen most frequently for wire rope. (Operating loads not to exceed 20% of catalog Breaking Strength.) Operating loads may have to be reduced when life, limb or valuable property are at risk or other than new rope is used. A design factor of 10 is usually chosen when wire rope is used to carry personnel. (Operating loads not to exceed 10% of catalog Breaking Strength.) "

Crawford Truck's Jerr-Dan Heavy Duty Wrecker Side Recovery System

The Jerr-dan side recovery system for heavy duty wreckers allows tow truck operators to get tough work done on the side.  This Jerrdan dominates even the most challenging jobs with the Jerr-Dan SRS. It can pull from multiple angles with the boom in pulling position, the SRS can pull from the the front, side or rear, and its patent pending Pivoting recovery Boom hydraulically pivots to allow recovery from either side.

With only 24" to mount, it can be retrofitted to an existing wrecker.  And the optional tool compartment maximizes your total storage capacity.  Plus, unlike others in the industry, the independent self-stowing flip down claw/ spade is truly self-stowing.  You get greater strength and holding power with less equipment to worry about getting int he way.  Do the job anywhere and everywhere.  Run hard with the Jerr-Dan Side Recovery System for heavy-duty wreckers.

The top six reasons why the SRS for Heavy- Duty Wreckers means business.  With the boom locked into pulling position, the SRS is structurally capable of pulling at multiple angles, forward, sideways and rearward.  It reduces storage loss by utilizing the 24" space to mount- it can also be retrofitted to an existing wrecker by simply removing the 24" tunnel tool compartment.  The independent self-stowing flip down claw/ spade feature- allows for greater strength and holding power.  The standard hydraulic stabilizer legals allow the unit to fit varying frame heights from 40" to 45".  Additional tool storage capability with the optional toolbox which provides tool storage and better fit and finish.  The patent pending hydraulic pivoting recovery boom makes recovery from either side of the vehicle safe, easy and efficient.

The recommended chassis requirements for SRS-W25S and SRS-W35S are as follows.  The minimum frame RBM for both rails combines is 3,200,000 in lbs to 4,200,000 in lbs.  The Minimum front GAWR 25-ton, 30 ton and 35 ton wreckers are 16,000 lbs and the 50 ton & 60 ton wreckers are 18,000 lbs.  The frame height range is 40" to 45" while the frame width range is 34" - 35" while the additional cab to axle is 24".  The SRS also comes with optional equipment such as 24", 3/4 height driver and passenger side stand alone tool compartments, 3/4" diameter x 200' long (6 x 37 IWRC RRL EIPS) galvanized winch cable ILO standard winch cable, snatch blocks and in-cab remote control transmitter holder with audible warning signals.  These tow trucks for sale at Crawford Truck are completely customizable to your needs.  We are also able to retrofit the SRS to used tow trucks for sale.  These Jerr-Dan tow trucks are some of the best wreckers in Massachusetts available for purchase.
