is it important to get 1st service on atv?
Hi! I really dont want to spend 300$ on first service for my atv, so I was wondering if its truly needed. Have you guys never done first service and lasted years?
I was just thinking of changing the main stuff such as oil, oil filter, air filter.. ect
You did not say what type of ATV you have and you did not mention if it came with any kind of warranty.
If you ATV did come with a warranty you will have to take it to the dealer for the 1st service or it will void your warranty.
You are correct that you can change the items you mentioned by yourself. This is a major part of the 1st service. The problem that may arise is that if there is anything that is wrong, worn or wearing incorrectly you would not be able to spot it yourself. The 1st service isn't just about part replacement, it is about inspection. The dealer will be looking for minor things like cable wear/scuffing/adjustment, rubber boot cover rips, tears, etc, brake adjustment, clutch adjustment, etc (the list goes on and on - there is usually a 50 - 100 point check list).
Since you are new to off-roading you should take it in for the 1st service, but ask to talk to the mechanic that is going to work on the ATV. Most mechanics are interested in you knowing what to look for and how to maintain your ride properly. Most mechanics do not like to see a vehicle that is neglected. You showing interest and wanting to learn proper care and maintenance will help you out in the long run.
When you meet your shop mechanic explain that you are new to riding. Ask the mechanic what is involved with the 1st service. Have the mechanic explain to you why things are done (air filter, oil, oil filter are obvious, but there will probably be things on the list that you are unsure of why they are done - ask).
If you do take the ride in for the 1st service, don't just drop the thing off and leave. Talk to the mechanic and/or service manager to find out what is being done and why.
The more knowledge you can get on your ride and how it works will help you out in the long run.

What Mods can i do to my Kawasaki bayou 220 atv?
Looking to do mods on my 89 kawasaki bayou 220. Pretty tough little bike but not very fast. Would like to get some speed out of it. Any ideas for pipes or Air filters or anything else?
I had a Bayou 220 that had quite a few mods.. It had a K&N air filter, K&N Precharger filter wrap, K&N jetted carb, and a Cobra exhaust. I do not know how it was stock because I got it that way. It had pretty good power for a 220 but was very loud. If a loud pipe doesn't bother you these would be some great mods, it was just a little loud for my taste.
