free-standing clean-air filtration system?
I saw one that interested me on one of those cable stations that showcases different cleaning products for you home. It is a fairly tall tower-like structure. They gave a demonstration of it contained in plexiglass and blew smoke and dust in there and it sucked it all in. They had another brand set up right beside it, also contained in plexiglass which could not compete. Was wondering if any of you have purchased one of these and how it works for you. I am wondering if it will really take the cigarette smoke (it looks like it can) away and remove the nasty smell of left-over smoke. Or, if any of you can recommend a good one that you may own yourself.
my mom has a honeywell 17000. we don't smoke but i'm highly allergic to her cat and after she turned that thing on it was like the cat wasn't even in the apartment anymore. it sucks up tons of dust and hair that you can see if you open it up. it comes with a permanent HEPA filter and a carbon pre-filter (good for odors and smoke) that needs occasional changing.
i just ordered one for my own apartment. it's not as cute and trendy as the towers, but i figure why sacrifice a perm filter and a great working machine for looks. you can order one off amazon for 107.00. be sure to get the one that says permanent HEPA filter--the old one had a filter that needed changing

Can I break my lease?
I just moved to Oklahoma City and have been here for about a month. My landlord(s) is a management company and I live in a 4-plex house. I got the place without physically looking at it, since I was 500 miles away before I moved.
When I moved in I was informed that my dining room floor was going to be carpeted, it was formerly tile that they removed before I moved in. So I basically don't have a dining room floor. They also said that they would order new stove knobs and replace broken screen windows.
It's been 25 days and I have repeatedly contacted them, with no reply, or a "We'll call you and be out there tomorrow"...
All of my windows, save one, are screwed and bolted shut, my front door sticks so much that I have to kick it open, and my outside front door is made out of plexiglass. I also don't have any smoke detectors.
If anyone can help me, I'd like to know if I can break this lease and move out.
you can OH SO leave that place, they already have been the one that have broken your lease by not providing you with a living space that is safe and functional. They have to fix those things that you requested to be fixed, they have like 15 days in most states to respond with a reasonable solution to the problems. Not having knobs on the stove, not having a functional floor in your dinning room, not having working windows are all safety risks, especially with the windows, you could not get out of the apartment if there were a fire. Do you have a funtional smoke detector?
I would write all the problems with the apartment and what they had presented to you to get you to initially rent the apartment and send it to the management and also to the city's property inspection department and the Attorney General. and "CC" the landlords copy that you are also sending this to the other departments. Then exclaim that you will be moving in 30 days, due to the lack of repair and the "slum like" conditons that you are now living with, no matter what takes place ... FIRST get another apartment. Then do the actions.
