Trying to get a Polaris Xplorer running. The clutch and starter was disassembled.?
So my buddy and I are trying to fix his 1995 Polaris Xplorer 400. We're trying to figure out where the starter drive comes into play with starting this atv, and we're pull starting it. The electric starter is broken. Another person said to me that the starter drive is supposed to engage with the clutch when starting, but then disengage when running. Please help!
the starter drive doesnt engage the clutch it engages the flywheel (which is on the right side of the crankshaft) when the starter drive (bendix) is engaged by the starter it will rotate out and turn the flywheel, when power from the starter is taken away it will rotate back in.....ps the bendix is expensive ($130)from polaris but an aftermarket one is available from tucker/rocky or parts unlimited for around $60...hope this helps

How do I start my 2001 Polaris Sportsman 500 H.O. ATV with the electric starter?
I recently purchased a 2001 Polaris Sportsman 500 at an auction. I never met the owner so I couldn't ask. There is a pull starter and using that starts it up just fine but I couldn't find out how to start it with the electric start. I looked on the internet thinking maybe it just didn't have one but from what I found it seems like it came standard on this model. I asked a friend who has owned 3 different Polaris' and he said you just start it by turning the key like a car. I tried but it only has two positions that I can turn it to; on and off. When I say on i mean the neutral light comes on and the headlights can be turned on off. That also means the battery is perfectly fine. I don't know what else to try so any advice is appreciated.
Since you got it at an auction, the battery is probably dead. You might be able to charge it and if it holds, it will be ok.
After you turn the key to on position, there is a button on the left handle bar for the starter. It will probably be either yellow or red and usually has a lightning bolt on it.
