Harness Atv How young can I ride horses with my kids?
I want to ride my horse (had him for years) with my 11 mo. daugther on front with me. I have a special ATV/snowmobile harness I bought to use for her so she would be securly "attached" to me. We will only be riding around home, not on any hills or rough terrain. What do you think?
My horse is a complete dead head!! Always at the back of the pack and I can hardly get him to canter. VERY calm.
Also wanted to add that the harness is quick to detach if need be. I just thought that way my hands would be completely free to move about if I needed to care for her (wipe nose, give a drink etc.)
Also If i would need to dismount quickly I can use my arms to brace myself.
But you don't KNOW that your horse won't react. If your daughter squeals - and heck, my fourth child is nearing six months, I know all about squealing children! - your "dead" horse could spook, buck and / or bolt, and then where will you be? Unless you are a highly skilled gymnast I seriously doubt that you will be able to control the way you fall and throw in a graceful jump to land on your feet - and even Olympic gymnasts end face down sometimes. If you fall, you will crush your child when you land.
And you don't even need a plastic bag in a hedge or an 11 month old shouting "EEEEEE!" to create a situation where you fall. Horses can and do trip and stumble over their own feet - if that happened, you'd summersault straight off the front. (And please don't insult me by suggesting your balance is perfect and you will not fall - I've seen an Olympic medal winning rider fall off a 14h pony who tripped over its own feet; it was a freak situation, but it happened!)
No matter how cute it may be to strap your baby to yourself, I cannot believe that your maternal instinct is not screaming right now. Mine is!

In most cases you should be able to easily repair any bad wire sections by splicing in a new wire unless the cycle had a major fire and burned all the wire insulation off all the wires. Simply use household "wire nuts" and new copper wires to splice in the wire sections.
