How do you replace a front differentail seal in a 1997 chevy 1500 4x4 on the drive side?
I have already replaced the passenger side with little trouble and it works great but now the drives side axle is being a pane. I was wondering if you just have to knock out the axle with a hammer or do you have to open up the differentail case and take off a clip of some sort? I know on the passager side the axle just knocked right out with a hammer but i have hit the snot not of the drives side and it has not move at all. I looked at the front axle blue prints and it shows that both side have a retainer clip so i would emagine that you would be able to hit it out too. If you could tell me a better way to removing the axle then a hammer then please share. thanks
Yep some times they can be a real pain. They use a spring steel ring to lock the axle in the diff case.
If you cock the axle at all it will hang up on the ring instead of sliding past it, and the more you hammer on it, which you really shouldn't do, it just jambs it tighter.
Lightly tap the axle back in. Then grab a long pry bar and a block of wood. Slip the bar between the axle and diff, using the block of wood for the pry bar to pivot on. Usually all it take is a quick snap of the pry bar and it pops right out.
Hammering on the axles can damage the joints/bearings in them.
And I know this might sound silly, but you do have the axle disconnected at the other end already don't you? If not it's not going to come out of the diff.
