ajust cam chain 1981 xs 650 yamaha?
hi i am trying to a just cam chain on my 1981 xs650 can any one help.it looks like a piece of cake but not. thanks jp.

Ok,,,By the Book
*Remove L/H engine cover so you can turn the crankshaft with a wrench.
Best to removes Spark Plugs so ya dont have to fight the compression
*Remove CAP #22
*Loosen NUT# 24
* To Tighten Chain--Screw IN # 16 until Pin #14 is Flush with end of #16
****You need to Rotate the Crankshaft CounterClockwise and Hold a slight bind on crank in that direction.
That causes all the Chain Slack to accumulate in the Back side of the Engine,,,where the Adjuster can press in on it & take the slack out
*After You have Screw # 16 "tightened in" until the Pin#14 is Flush with end of 16,,,,
Rotat Crank back and forth a bit and Watch/Feel for Pin #14 moving In & Out.
The "Spec" is,,,,No movement- to -Barely perceptible,to a Tiny bit of Motion.
Once adjusted,,
Snug up Locknut #24,,,and re-install Cap #22
All done.

Alternate Method,,,Easier & Better
*Remove Cap #22
*Loosen LockNut #24
*Run Motor a few minutes till it well warm
* With Engine RUNNING,
Tighten the Adjuster Screw #16 while WATCHING the
PIN #14 bounce in/out the end of #16
*Tighten until Motion(of #14) just barely Stops.
That's ZERO SLACK.
Tighten the LockNut #24,,and replace the Cap 22.
All Done.

Lottsa Bookworms will criticize the "Live Adjustment" 'cuz it's Not in any service manual.
It's actually an Undocumented YAMAHA method to get all the slack outa the chain .
It's the best way to do it.
Do NOT Overtighten,,,anything beyond the point of Punger Pin STOPPING it's bobbing in&out,,,just puts undue pressure on the chain and will "adjust itself" via eatning th chain guides.

What size chain does a Yamaha XV250 (Virago) use?
It might vary with year, but a 2005 XV250 use a 520 x 114 link chain. Check the bike bandit site for your year.
